Būdvardžių linksniavimas Lithuanian adjective declension

In Lithuanian, an adjective changes its ending to agree with the noun it describes — in gender, number and case. A case shows the role of a word in the sentence (who does something, to whom, with what, where), and each case has its own ending. Masculine adjectives follow three declension types: I — ending in -(i)as (geras, žalias), II — in -us (gražus), III — in -is (naminis); the matching feminine endings are -(i)a, -i and -ė. The tables below show the endings with examples in each case: vardininkas (nominative), kilmininkas (genitive), naudininkas (dative), galininkas (accusative), įnagininkas (instrumental) and vietininkas (locative). The seventh case, the vocative (Šauksmininkas), is the same as the nominative for adjectives.

How to tell the declension type

Look at the ending of the adjective in the nominative case.

  • Type I — masculine in -as or -ias, feminine in -a or -ia: geras → gera, žalias → žalia. After a soft stem (-ias) the -i- stays in every form: žalio, žaliam.
  • Type II — masculine in -us, feminine in -i: gražus → graži, platus → plati.
  • Type III — masculine in -is, feminine in -ė: naminis → naminė. These are mostly adjectives with the suffix -inis formed from nouns (namas → naminis, medis → medinis) and comparatives in -esnis (geresnis).
  • The exception is didelis: it ends in -is, but its masculine forms follow type I and its feminine forms (didelė) follow type III.

Note

  • In the masculine, adjective endings differ from noun endings in four forms: N. (Dat.) sg.geram tėvui, gražiam sūnui Vt. (Loc.) sg.gerame tėve, gražiame sūnuje V. (Nom.) pl.geri tėvai N. (Dat.) pl.geriems tėvams, gražiems sūnums
  • Adjectives in -us have a stem that is sometimes hard and sometimes soft. It is hard in the nominative, genitive and accusative singular (gražus, gražaus, gražų) and in the nominative plural (gražūs); in all other forms it is soft, with -i- (gražiam, gražiu, gražiame…).
  • The only exception to the general rule is didelis. Its masculine forms follow type I, and its feminine forms follow type III (in the tables its forms are underlined with dots).
  • Comparatives decline like adjectives in -is (geresnis), superlatives like adjectives in -as (geriausias). Didelis also changes its stem: didelis → didesnis → didžiausias.
  • The vocative (Šauksmininkas) of adjectives is the same as the nominative: Mielas Jonai! Miela Daiva! Mieli draugai!
